Character

Pomerats have lively personalities. They are energetic, friendly, playful, and loving.

The Pomerat is a lively and friendly dog which loves being around the family members. They thrive in the company of its family members, and it likes to be with them. Their playful nature makes them good around elder children, but they are not recommended for younger ones. These dogs are wary of strangers. Training them is not a problem as they are intelligent and easy to train. Pomerats also get along with other dogs provided they are socialized early. As they love being around the family members, leaving them alone for long intervals of time develops behavioral issues such as digging up the yard and chewing things around the house.

Maintenance

The Pomerat is regarded as a low maintenance dog as far as grooming is concerned. In fact, they do even shed excessively. The coat sizes can vary from long to short. If the Pomerat has the long coat of the Pomeranian, then they would be required to be brushed at least thrice a week. However, the dog has shorter hair like the Rat Terrier them a weekly brushing of the coat also suffices the need. Regular baths are not recommended for them, and a mild dog shampoo should be used after consultation. Occasional trimming of the nails is recommended as and when required and their teeth should be brushed at least thrice a week to avoid dental problems and also maintain good dental health.

Ideal Environment

They do well in a farm setting or an apartment. They need plenty of exercise as do most dogs that have high energy.

The Pomerat is a very energetic dog. It needs its one hour of activity and exercise daily. These activities should be divided into two or three sessions. Their activities can be in the form of walks around the neighborhood, visit to the dog park, or simply playing fetch with the ball or frisbee in the yard. They can develop behavioral changes such as digging and chewing if not exercised properly. Another habit which the owners must pay close attention to is their habit of digging the yard and trying to escape. They can adapt the apartment style of living if they have someone around and get exercised. The family must take care of Pomerat during the winters and summers as they do not like extreme climatic conditions.

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.
